New Geekbench 6 tests devices’ performance at cutting-edge tasks

Primate Labs introduced Geekbench 6 on Tuesday, the first significant update in years to a premier cross-platform benchmarking application.

The new version adds tests to check the performance of Macs, iPhones, iPads, Androids and PCs as they carry out new, cutting-edge tasks.

The best way to solve “My Mac is faster than your PC” arguments is a cross-platform benchmarking application. Run the app on both computers for hard data on how they compare.

For many years, Geekbench has been one of the preferred options for such comparisons. Primate Labs periodically releases updates, of course, with the last major new version coming out three years ago. The new one aims to keep the performance test relevant as the types of tasks we ask our computers to carry out change over time.

“Geekbench 6’s CPU benchmark measures performance in new application areas including Augmented Reality and Machine Learning, so you’ll know how close your system is to the cutting-edge,” says Primate Labs.

And there are graphics-related updates, too. “New to Geekbench 6 is support for Vulkan, the next-generation cross-platform graphics and compute API,” the app’s developer said.

Because the scores are calculated differently, don’t compare results between versions. For example, a 2022 iPad Pro got an 8340 multi-core score on Geekbench 5 but 9325 on the new version.

Real-world results

As noted, the software offers different tests for general performance and graphics performance. Whatever the test, Primate Labs promises it reflects real-world performance of the various computers.

“Geekbench’s tests measure tasks like how quickly a device can load an example website, render a PDF, add filters to photos, and process HDR,” says the developer. “These tests are precisely crafted to ensure that results represent real-world use cases and workloads.”

Designed from the ground-up for cross-platform comparisons, Geekbench 6 is available for wide array of operating systems. That includes macOS and iOS/iPadOS, of course. The versions for Windows, Android and Linux can be found on the Primate Labs’ website.
