How to Check and Disable Precise Location Tracking on iPhone

  • Learn how to check which apps have access to precise location tracking on your iPhone.
  • Discover how to disable precise location tracking for privacy and security.
  • Understand the difference between precise and approximate location tracking.

When you first open an iOS app, it may ask for permission to access your precise location. It can be easy to forget which apps you have given permission to, and which are still tracking your location. Here is how to check and turn off precise location tracking on your iPhone.

The main choices when the location tracking dialog appears after opening an app for the first time are “Allow Once, “Allow While Using App,” and “Don’t Allow.” In the top left corner is a “Precise: On” button. Keeping this enabled allows the app to track your exact location, down to a specific house or building. Alternatively, you can opt for approximate location, which only shows which city you are in.

To turn off precise location tracking on your iPhone, open the Settings app and swipe down to Privacy & Security. Tap Location Services and choose an app from the list to see if it is using your precise location. Look for the toggle next to Precise Location at the bottom and tap to turn it off. Remember, when you turn off precise tracking, apps can still track your location, it is just less exact. If you want to turn off tracking fully for an app, choose “Never” at the top.
