Apple’s New Patents Could Let You Control Your TV With Anything

  • Apple has filed a patent application that would let you control your Apple TV 4K with any object
  • The patent application, “Devices And Methods For Controlling Electronic Devices Or Systems With Physical Objects”, details how you can wave any object to control a TV set
  • Apple has also filed a second patent application called “System And Method Of Controlling Devices Using Motion Gestures” where users could use motion detection from an Apple Watch to control their Apple Music playback

Apple is looking to make controlling your TV set easier than ever with two new patent applications. The first patent application, “Devices And Methods For Controlling Electronic Devices Or Systems With Physical Objects”, details how you can wave any object, such as a hand, baseball bat, or any object lying around, to control your Apple TV 4K. The second patent application, “System And Method Of Controlling Devices Using Motion Gestures”, details how users could use motion detection from an Apple Watch to control their Apple Music playback.

This patent application includes some common gestures that are already used by Apple Vision Pro, such as a raising or lowering of a hand to change the volume control, or pressing the palm of your right hand against your left breast to skip back to a previous track. The patent application also includes an illustration of a person slowly rotating their hand with one outstretched finger, which is the universal sign for “wrap it up” when nearing the end of a show.

It is important to note that just because Apple has filed these patent applications, it does not necessarily mean that these products will be released. That may be especially true in this case, as the already good Siri Remote is being improved, rather than replaced. The new versions of tvOS and iOS will include a way to help you find a lost Siri Remote.

With these two patent applications, Apple is looking to make controlling your TV set easier than ever.
