Redirect Google Maps Links to Apple Maps

  • Apple Maps vs. Google Maps
  • Why you might want to open links in Apple Maps
  • How to modify links
  • A note about Shortcuts
  • Using a Safari extension

You might prefer Apple Maps, but the world seems to use Google Maps more. It is possible to open Google Maps links in Apple Maps, though. Despite Google having a larger market share, Apple Maps has its own benefits, such as being more focused on data privacy. There are ways to modify Google Maps links so they open in Apple Maps, such as extracting coordinates from the URL and using them to create an Apple Maps URL. Shortcuts can no longer extract the coordinates of latitude and longitude from Google URLs, but a Safari extension can. The Mapper extension is available on the App Store for $1.99, and runs on macOS, iPadOS, and iOS. When you tap on the thumbnail, address, or directions buttons in a Google search result, Mapper will take you to that location in Apple Maps. With this extension, you can keep your sense of direction rooted in Apple Maps despite the world using Google Maps.
