How to Set Up and Use Personal Voice on iOS 17

  • Create a digital version of your voice in just 15 minutes
  • Set up Personal Voice on iOS 17 devices
  • Use your Personal Voice with iOS 17 Live Speech

Apple’s newest iOS 17 update allows users to create a Personal Voice that can help those who have difficulty speaking communicate with others. After 15 minutes of dictation, your iPhone can create a digital version of your voice, processed locally and encrypted. To set up Personal Voice on iOS 17 devices, open the Settings app and head to Accessibility > Personal Voice > Create a Personal Voice. Then, record 150 phrases with the iPhone directly in front of your face in a quiet room and lock your phone and place it on a charger. It may take up to three nights for the voice to be finished processing.

Once your voice is done processing, you can use your Personal Voice with iOS 17 Live Speech. Enable Live Speech in the Settings app and select your voice. If your voice doesn’t show on the list, give it time or try restarting your iPhone. With Live Speech enabled and your voice selected, you can triple-tap the sleep/wake button to open the Live Speech text-to-speech tool. You can then type in the box or choose any of your predefined favorite phrases.

Personal Voice is still in its beta process and the processing speed is expected to improve as time goes on. Give it a try and see what lies ahead. Personal Voice will be arriving as a feature in iOS 17 later this fall.
