Retrofit Existing Ceiling Fans with HomeKit and Siri Control

  • Lutron Caseta offers the most elegant and user-friendly HomeKit lighting solution
  • Lutron’s Fan Speed Control is the perfect complement to the existing dimmer light switches
  • Lutron provides a great way to retrofit existing ceiling fans with Home app and Siri control

Lutron Caseta is an ideal HomeKit lighting solution and the Fan Speed Control is the perfect complement to the existing line of dimmer light switches. With the Fan Speed Control, you can retrofit existing ceiling fans with Apple HomeKit smart home control, giving you the ability to control your fan with the Home app and Siri. It’s a great way to maintain wall switch control without needing to mount a separate remote to the wall, and with the starting price of $59, it’s competitive to other dedicated HomeKit smart fans on the market.

The Fan Speed Control includes the ability to set how fast your ceiling fan spins too. Switch buttons let you turn the fan on or off with one click, increase or decrease fan speed by 25% intervals, or assign a favorite fan speed to the center button on the switch. Green LED lights indicate fan speed status, and you can control fan speed from the switch, smart home control, or HomeKit scenes or automation. The only feature that dedicated HomeKit ceiling fans have over ceiling fans that retroactively add smart control with Lutron is fan direction control, which will still need to be changed with a manual switch.

Lutron provides documentation for installing the fan speed control, and once installed, it can be assigned to a room in the Lutron app. You also need Lutron’s smart bridge to operate the Fan Speed Control, which adds at least $79 to the initial cost in addition to each $59 switch. However, you can buy a starter kit bundle for $20 more that includes a dimmer switch and remote 3-way kit that would otherwise cost $59 on its own, saving you about $40 if you need the dimmer switch too.

I’ve been testing the Caseta by Lutron Fan Speed Control on two ceiling fans and so far, it’s been working perfectly – no buzzing, delays, or hiccups. I highly recommend Lutron Caseta and Smart Fan Control for HomeKit enthusiasts as it requires a little bit more set up, but the user experience is great.
