Apple Patent Shows Smart Ring Capable of Haptic Notifications and Inputs

  • A new Apple patent proposes a Smart Ring that would give Apple Watch-style haptic notifications, and let the wearer press on the surface to respond.
  • The patent suggests the ring could provide wireless input to various companion devices such as smart watches, health monitoring devices, headphones, ear buds and the like, as well as stationary devices such as desktop computers and smart home control and entertainment devices.
  • The ring would have a rigid center worn on the finger and a rotating element around the outside, with touch-sensitive buttons for selecting something or rotating around the finger.

Apple has been exploring the possibility of a Smart Ring for years, with the newly-revealed patent being the latest in a long line of patents and patent applications. The patent suggests the ring would be able to notify the wearer of incoming notifications and provide wireless input to various devices. It would have a rigid center worn on the finger and a rotating element on the outside with touch-sensitive buttons, potentially allowing the wearer to control devices with simple movements. If this project comes to fruition it could provide an unobtrusive and convenient way to access and control devices.
